The Global Citizen Scholarship Program empowers exceptional young people by facilitating their participation in international conferences as well as tailor-made, short-term academic trainings and supporting and mentoring them during the development of their own “SDG Micro-Project.”
The scholarship includes the chance to attend renowned international fora, interact and network with high-level change-makers, access specialized educational seminars and trainings, and gain insights from expert mentors and workshops provided by the Centre.

In 2022, the BKMC has granted 17 scholarships to young African changemakers from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, and the Philippines. For a third year, the program is possible with the generous financial support of RELX Group and is carried out in partnership with the University of Bordeaux, their summer school program, and in cooperation with MCI Innsbruck University.

In 2021, the BKMC granted eight scholarships to young African changemakers from Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe. For a second year, the program was made possible with the generous financial support of RELX Group and was carried out in partnership with the University of Bordeaux and their summer school program.
This year, the program included participation in a multidisciplinary academic training course at the University of Bordeaux on “African Cities in 2030”, six expert workshops on various themes including project management and fundraising, one-on-one mentoring, guidance in the implementation of an SDG Micro-Project over a six-month period, and networking opportunities.
In December 2021, the BKMC, together with RELX and the University of Bordeaux awarded program certificates at the closing ceremony. Read more here.

In 2020, the Global Citizen Scholarship Program took on a new form, adapting to the current circumstances with regards to COVID-19. The BKMC selected 6 outstanding African global citizen change-makers for the program, which included an intensive online training course with the University of Bordeaux on the theme of, “Africa and COVID-19: Multidisciplinary Insights,” expert meetings and workshops hosted and curated by the BKMC, one-on-one mentoring, and the completion of an individually proposed SDG Micro-Project.
In December 2020, the BKMC, together with RELX and the University of Bordeaux awarded program certificates to the six extraordinary African Global Citizen Scholars – Akosua Pepra, Oduor Kevin, Hikmat Baba Dua, Tafadzwa Sachikonye, Barbara Nakijoba, and Ruvimbo Samanga – for successfully completing the scholarship program and implementing outstanding SDG Micro-Projects in their communities. PROGRAM FRAMEWORK
Attendance at International Fora
Scholars are sponsored to attend high-level, international fora such as European Forum Alpbach and the Africa-France Summit on Sustainable Cities and Regions. Select scholars have the opportunity to attend high-level meetings with politicians and other stakeholders where they can share their unique insights. This assists scholars in building their professional networks.
Tailor-made Short-term Academic Trainings
Scholars are supported to take part in specialized, tailor-made academic trainings focused on different themes. These trainings allow scholars to gain useful knowledge and skills and to benefit from peer-to-peer exchange.
Development of an SDG Micro-Project
When applying, scholars submit a proposal for an “SDG Micro-Project” to be carried-out with the support of the Ban Ki-moon Centre. These projects address one or more of the SDGs and seek to contribute to meeting challenges in the scholars’ communities and/or regions. Scholars present their projects to an expert panel and submit a project report at the end of the implementation period.
Mentoring and Workshops
Scholars are paired with a mentor who can support them during their SDG Micro-Project development. Furthermore, the Ban Ki-moon Centre provides workshops and incentive speakers during regular virtual meetings with the scholars.
Certificate of Achievement and Alumni Network Membership
After the successful completion of the SDG Micro-Project, scholars are awarded with a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Co-chairs of the Ban Ki-moon Centre. Additionally, scholars become a part of the Alumni Network of the Centre.
