Last week, the Ban Ki-moon Centre hosted the first of four Regional Preparatory Meetings for its yearly landmark forum, the Global Engagement and Empowerment Forum (GEEF). The meeting was hosted in Nur-Sultan (formally Astana), Kazakhstan at the margins of the Astana Economic Forum.
The main Co-hosts of the GEEF are Yonsei University and its Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE) in South Korea and the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens. The Preparatory Meeting brought together members of Yonsei, IGEE, and other affiliated universities and academic institutions to discuss the theme of the upcoming GEEF 2020 and next steps.
In addition to the Ban Ki-moon Centre and YonseiUniversity/IGEE, other participants included:
- Ambassador Kim Won-soo, Board Member of the Ban Ki-moon Centre
- Al-Farabi KazNU, Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development (BKMISD), Kazakhsta
- Tsinghua University, Institute for Sustainable Development Goals, China
- Bordeaux University, France
- Yeosijae Future Consensus Institute, South Korea
In addition to the Preparatory Meeting, the Ban Ki-moon Centre also participated in the 12th Astana Economic Forum on May 16-17. Board member Ambassador Kim Won-soo featured in an event with the International Advisory Board on Digitization in Kazakhstan where he spoke with the current Prime Minister and emphasized the importance of inclusion and, “bridging the digital divide.”
On the second day of the Forum, Centre CEO Monika Froehler featured as a key speaker at the G-Global Strategic Session on facing global challenges. Froehler underlined why it is important to include youth and women in building a sustainable future for us all as, “they are the future!”
The Ban Ki-moon Centre looks forward to hosting the next GEEF Preparatory meeting in South Korea next month!
