


The first BKMC x UNESCO APCEIU collaborative online course is still available on GCED Online Campus!
The first collaborative online course project by BKMC and UNESCO APCEIU, “Becoming Global Citizens for a Sustainable Society,” introduced us the SDGs and the notion of Global Citizenship through the series of lectures by renowned experts from all over the world, interviews with scholars, advocates and representatives from all different sectors, and case presentations by active global citizens.

The course aims to examine and critically reflect on the revolving issues around the globe at local, national, and international levels by providing a platform where learners can virtually meet and learn from one another.
Through this course, learners could deepen their understanding of the SDGs and global citizenship, exchange and embrace different perspectives, and challenge their own assumptions.


Launched in September 2019, this course is a self-paced course that is open all year round to anyone who aspires to assume active roles in bringing meaningful changes to oneself and to global society!
“Becoming Global Citizens in a Sustainable Society” is comprised of five difference modules in which lectures, discussions, interviews or documentary films are included in respective topics.
Speakers of this course includes BKMC Co-chairs Ban Ki-moon and Heinz Fischer and a number of other stellar speakers from UN organizations, universities, NGOs, governments, and the private sector.


After completing all courses, students will received a certificate issued by UNESCO APCEIU and the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens. Requirements for the completion are as followed:

3) Take a quiz
4) Final Assignment

BKMC CEO Monika Froehler attends the AFS Global Conference and the EUNA GCED Network Meeting in Montreal
CEO of the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens Monika Froehler attended the AFS Global Conference 2019 held by the AFS Intercultural Programs in Montreal, Canada on October 9-11th.

Under the theme of “Active Global Citizenship—and How to Educate for It,” the Conference gathered thousands of educators, learners, experts, and advocates for the SDG 4: Quality Education and Global Citizenship Education (GCED). More than 75 sessions were hosted, and Froehler featured as a speaker at the Plenary Session: “Are We There Yet? A Hard Look at the State of Global Competence Education Around the World.”

On the margins of the conference, she also attended a session: “Mapping EUNA GCED Network” hosted by the Centre’s partner UNESCO APCEIU. The network meeting was held in consequence of the previous regional GCED network meeting for Europe and North America held in Lisbon in November 2018.

On September 30th, 2019, the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens in cooperation with the GCED Online Campus team of UNESCO APCEIU launched the first collaborative online course titled:

CEO Monika Froehler moderates a session on “Voices of Youth” at the 4th GCED Conference
On September 3rd-4th, BKMC CEO Monika Froehler attended the 4th International Conference on Global Citizenship Education that was co-organized by UNESCO APCEIU, Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Korean Ministry of Education in partnership with UNESCO in Seoul, South Korea.

The Conference also hosted a booth on the “GCED Online Campus” by UNESCO APCEIU. In partnership with the APCEIU’s Office of Education and Training, the Ban Ki-moon Centre has co-developed two online courses this year.

As one of them titled “Becoming Global Citizens for a Sustainable Society” will be launched on the Online Campus platform later in this month, the booth displayed promotional materials and more information on the course. Lots of the Conference participants were curious to know more about this course as well as the other course on gender equality.

Kini from Ghana expressed her love for promoting peace with children. She has reached hundreds of kids in Ghana and helped them overcome conflicts. APCEIU Director Hyun-mook Lim said, “GCED will support humanities with slow but unstoppable advancement to peace.”Manrique from Guatemala shared his deep insights on how to network with youth for GCED. “GCED to me is simply a tool with a lot of potentials,” he said.





Experts’ Meeting on Teaching and Learning Responsible Transformative Engagement
On the 16th and 17th of February the Experts’ Meeting on Teaching and Learning Responsible Transformative Engagement organized by the Centre, UNESCO, and UNESCO APCEIU took place in Seoul, South Korea. The meeting brought together more than 20 international experts from public, private, academic, and/or NGO sectors to discuss ways to engage youth in influencing the systems that impacts their quality of life.
The group actively discussed the fundamental issues of addressing the youth from varied perspectives as well as peaceful revolutions of youth activists that led to the change of government, the role of social media and digital citizenship, and more other important matters regarding the subject. The ideas and suggestions that were brought up during the meeting will be included in the policy brief which will be published by UNESCO.

Co-chair Ban Ki-moon delivered congratulatory address at the 3rd International Conference on GCED
The Centre’s Co-chair Ban Ki-moon delivered congratulatory address at the opening session of the 3rd International Conference on GCED co-organized by UNESCO APCEIU, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea. The conference was on the topic of “Platform on Pedagogy and Practice” with focus on local-contextualization of Global Citizenship Education (GCED).
“As Former Secretary-General (of the UN), I will continue to forge a bright future for next generation. I greatly look forward to future collaboration between my Centre and APCEIU,” said Ban.Ban emphasized on education on global citizenship in the efforts of achieving the SDGs, concerning 60 million children who are left out of school throughout the world. APCEIU Director Chung Utak also welcomed the conference participants, and Vice Minister Park Chun-ran of the Korean Ministry of Education delivered opening address.
