The Elders delegation meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping

The delegation of The Elders met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, China on April 1st, 2019. The delegation consisted of Chair of The Elders and former President Mary Robinson of Ireland, Deputy Chair of The Elders and BKMC Co-chair Ban Ki-moon, and former President Ernesto Zedillo of Mexico.

During the meeting, President Xi pointed out that the world today faces profound changes unseen in a century, while the prospect of international cooperationsolutions to global challenges and the future of human society were being thought on by more and more insightful people.

The Elders delegation expressed that China has played a responsible and constructive role at a crucial moment when multilateralism is faced with challenges, adding that China has adhered to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and taken an active part in the cause of peace and development in Africa.

Ban Ki-moon interviews with CNN and Al Jazeera at the WEF 2019

BKMC Co-chair Ban Ki-moon was interviewed by CNN and Al Jazeera during the World Economic Forum 2019 held in Davos, Switzerland. During his interview with CNN, Ban said that he is concerned about “the global economy because of protectionism and other crises around the world.”

About the global trade war, Ban answered that he is encouraged

“President Trump and President Xi Jinping have agreed to resolve these issues through negotiation. Negotiation seems to be going on well.”

Ban also said that, at opening of the Boao Forum for Asia that Ban has chairmanship of, Xi Jinping promised to have the Chinese people actively engaged in trade and commerce and opening up their market as well as the intellectual property right.

“Never in the past, since the beginning of North Korean nuclear crisis, have we seen such kind of a very positive and exciting development of situation. Particularly during last year, three summit meetings have taken place between the leaders of both South and North Korea and historical first unprecedentedly meeting took place between President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un,” said Ban.

Ban expressed his wishes that based on the lessons of the Singapore Summit on June 12th last year,

“two leaders will come out with much more concrete and detailed way to make sure that the complete denuclearization should be realized in a complete, very fiable, and universible manner.”

Ban Ki-moon Meets Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing

Ban Ki-moon and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing, China. The two leaders discussed how China can best apply its political leadership power in making Asia an important platform for promoting harmonious coexistence of the people around the world.

As host country of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) of which Ban is the Chairman, China promised to support the BFA to amplify its influence. Xi said that

    1. “the mission and purpose of the forum is to promote economic integration in Asia, boost exchanges and cooperation between regional countries and the world, to achieve mutual benefits and win-win results.”

Ban emphasized on the importance of promoting Asia’s openness and innovation to obtain strength and to solve global issues through unification of Asian countries.

During his official visit to Beijing, Ban also appreciated Xi’s support for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in making strategic decisions.

  1. “China has been playing a very important role,” Ban said, “I hope for and I urged him to continue to render his strong political leadership so that North Korea will be bound by all these agreements which will come out from the US-North Korean Summit and also the sincere implementation of Panmunjom declaration.”
