Global Citizenship Education aims to empower learners of all ages to assume active roles, both locally and globally, in building more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, secure and sustainable societies. SDG 4.7 envisions for all learners to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development by 2030, inter alia through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship, and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.

What has happened?

Mission 4.7

The Ban Ki-moon Centre is a key member of Mission 4.7 which is an initiative that seeks to mobilize global expertise to support governments and other major policy stakeholders in the implementation of the UNESCO ESD for 2030 Roadmap, the UNESCO Greening Education Partnership, as well as other UNESCO workstreams on SDG 4.7. In addition to advocating for the achievement of SDG 4.7 at global, national, and local levels, Mission 4.7 also aims to curate and create relevant educational resources and curricula, push countries for greater investments in quality education, and identify ways to train and support educators around the world.

Global Citizenship Education Forum

The International Global Citizenship Education (GCED) Forum is a collaborative initiative between the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens in partnership with the Salzburg Global Seminar and the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This timely event under the patronage of BKMC co-chair and 11th President of Austria Dr. Heinz Fischer, brings together over 100 thought leaders, policymakers, experts, and young people from around the world to discuss on Global Citizenship and other pressing issues.

GEMS Education

As Co-chair Ban Ki-moon is an Ambassador of the Model United Nations (MUN) of the GEMS World Academy, the BKMC holds close connections with the GEMS Education. GEMS World Academy Dubai, founded in 2008 as a member of the GEMS Education network of schools, has gone from strength to strength and now welcomes more than 1,500 students from 85 countries every day.

Transformative Education Summit

The year 2022 was a milestone for transforming education with the Transforming Education Summit at the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York. Before the Summit Co-chair Ban Ki-moon had held talks with UNESCO DG Audrey Azoulay, on the importance of GCED in the midst of the global education challenges. Subsequently the Ban Ki-moon Centre hosted three session as part of the Transforming Education Summit.
