On 7 and 8 March 2024, the Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens (BKMC) delegation embarked on an enriching visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to strengthen key partnerships in the region, deepen cooperation on the nexus of education and climate and engage with young changemakers at the GEMS World Academy Model United Nations (GWAMUN).

On the mission trip’s first day, BKMC Co-chairs Ban Ki-moon and Dr. Heinz Fischer, together with CEO Monika Froehler, visited the Dubai Cares office to discuss with H.E. Dr. Tariq Al Gurg and his team on the fruitful cooperation between the two organizations. Specifically, they highlighted their unwavering commitment to bringing about global change through education, setting the stage for the second phase of the “Your Future in Green Jobs” program after its successful inaugural year.

Later that day, Dr. Heinz Fischer engaged in discussions with H.E. Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council in Abu Dhabi, on bilateral relations between Austria and the UAE, emphasizing the importance of fostering global peace, security and global cooperation for a better future for all peoples of the world.

The trip was also an opportunity for cultural immersion: the delegation visited significant landmarks, such as the Abrahamic Family House, the Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum, and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, all the while learning about the region’s rich heritage through guided tours.

On the second day of the mission trip, the delegation dedicated a full day at the premises of GEMS World Academy, where Co-chair Ban Ki-moon has been acting as Ambassador since 2019 to the largest Model United Nations conference in the region (GWAMUN). The Co-chairs were warmly welcomed by the Principal and Chief Education Officer Dr. Saima Rana, who stressed the pivotal role of teachers and quality education in the development of young leaders.

After meeting a team of world-class teachers, Ban Ki-moon, Dr. Heinz Fischer as well as CEO Monika Froehler, had a valuable exchange with young student delegates of the GWAMUN. Together, they delved into critical issues, such as gender equality, youth engagement and empowerment, among other pressing topics. Additionally, the delegation interacted with the youngest representatives of the school – a group of kindergarten students passionate about promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These young students enthusiastically shared their activities with the BKMC delegation, asked thought-provoking questions, and had their book of records personally signed by both Co-chairs.

The day culminated with the Co-chairs addressing the students at the Opening Ceremony of GWAMUN. They emphasized the potential of the young generation to make a positive change in the world and urged them to act with passion and compassion while utilizing modern technology for the benefit of all:

“I have personally witnessed the great potential that lies within your generation. I see it in my grandchildren. I am absolutely convinced of your capabilities in finding innovative solutions that include the well-being of people whose voices have been silenced. You also have the talent to understand this crisis as a window of opportunity to change the world for the better.” said Ban Ki-moon at the Opening Ceremony of GWAMUN.

Dr. Heinz Fischer added on the topic of technology:

“You use technology not only to connect with friends but also to learn, share, and make your voices heard. Your generation has the potential to change the world through the tools at your disposal. However, with great power comes great responsibility. As you explore the wonders of technology, it’s crucial to consider the impact it has on our democratic values, human rights, and freedom of speech.”

The mission trip concluded at the residence of Sunny Varkey, Group Founder and Executive Chairman of GEMS Education, where the BKMC delegation, Varkey family, and dedicated GEMS leadership had a warm exchange over dinner. Overall, the Ban Ki-moon Centre’s visit to the UAE exemplified a commitment to fostering collaboration in the region, empowering youth, and advancing the SDGs with quality education.
